Gas ranges and stoves controls
The following is a description of most of the controls used oil gas ranges.
Gas Pressure Regulator
Most gas ranges are equipped with convertible pressure regulators. The regulator is preset for 4 inches water column for use on natural gas, and may be 10 inches of water column for use on LP gas. The range regulator is not adjustable.
Caution: Never attempt to use range regulators as the sole pressure regulator for LP gas. They are secondary-type range regulators and must be used in conjunction with a high pressure range regulator at the main LP gas supply tank.
The maximum allowable supply pressure to the range regulator is 14 inches of water column. The minimum supple pressure required for checking the regulator setting is 5 inches of water column for natural gas and 11 inches of water column for LP gas.
Three types of range regulators are used. To convert a stove to a different gas, find the regulator type used and make the conversion.
Surface Range Burners
The four surface range burners are made of plated steel and aluminum. The igniter ports on the side of the range burner head must be cleaned and in alignment with the flash tube for proper homer ignition. The range burner air shutter is a spring steel self-locking type. Care should be taken during cleaning and handling to prevent changing the stove shutter setting.
Air stove shutter adjustment turn on each range burner and examines its flame. It should be blue in color and not blow away from the range burner. If not, an air shutter adjustment will be necessary. Lift or remove the main stove top. Turn on the stove burner and adjust the air shutter to obtain a flame that is blue in color and does not blow away from the range burner head.
Range Surface Burner Valves
Most ranges use either a standard or surface burner valves. Both stove types are the push-to-turn type and use a universal gas orifice.
Universal gas orifices are designed to operate with either natural or LP gas.
The range universal orifice is a combination of a fixed orifice and an adjustable orifice. The needle is fixed in a position, while the stove orifice hood adjustable. The needle has an orifice drilled through it that is sized for LP gas operation.
In order to operate the range on LP gas, the orifice hood is screwed all the way down until the tapered needle point completely blocks off the orifice in the stove hood. The LP gas rate is now set by the size of the fixed orifice through the needle and the range gas pressure.
To operate the stove burners on natural gas, the orifice hood is screwed away from the needle. Gas then flows through the fixed orifice in the needle anti through the opening between the shoulder of the needle and the edge of the orifice in the stove hood.
With this arrangement, the natural gas rate is adjustable, while the LP gas is not. To change the gas flow rate remove the needle and replace the orifice hood with one of the desired prefacing.
